Wanfei (Carmen) Chen is a photographer, film director, and documentary filmmaker born and raised in Tianjin, China, and currently based in Toronto, Canada.
Carmen's journey began at the age of 9 when she was inspired by her father, a photojournalist. Under his influence, she cultivated a passion for photography, capturing fleeting moments, sharpening her aptitude for visual storytelling skills from a young age.
By the age of 20, Carmen was working professionally as a music photographer and band manager, immersing herself in the local music scene. These experiences sparked a deep connection between her visual work and music, a dynamic that later influenced her filmmaking.
Carmen studied film production at Toronto Film School from 2019 to 2022. During this time, she directed her first short film, Summer Fever, and refind her skills as a filmmaker. In 2023, her debut feature documentary The Youth in Care as co-DP, premiered at TIFF Lightbox.
Currently, Carmen is in the pre-production phase for her next short film, Out of Season, where she continues to explore themes of memory, identity, and the emotional landscape of sound and place.
